Teaching Mathematical Biology in a Summer School for Undergraduates
نویسندگان
چکیده
For the past four years, the University of Alberta has hosted a summer school on mathematical biology, aimed at undergraduate students who have completed 2–3 years of study in mathematics or a similar quantitative science. The aim of this summer school is to introduce the students to mathematical modelling and analysis applied to real biological systems. In the span of 10 days, students attend lectures and exercise sessions, learn how to set up mathematical models, and use analytical and computational tools to relate them to biological data. They experience the modelling process by working on a research project. In this paper, we explain our teaching philosophy, share some unique features of our summer school, and exemplify key course components.

We describe a unique Research Experience for Undergraduates and Research Experience for Veterinary students summer program at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The program focused on interdisciplinary research at the interface of biology and mathematics. Participants were selected to work on projects with a ...
متن کاملRole of E-Learning in Teaching Anatomical Sciences
Introduction: Medical undergraduates usually understand and memorize anatomical course material with difficulty. Also, the current text books and atlases of anatomy and histology do not fulfill all the learning needs of the undergraduates. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the role of internet websites and computer programs (i.e. the role of electronic learning) in teaching....
متن کاملUndergraduates Achieve Learning Gains in Plant Genetics through Peer Teaching of Secondary Students
This study tests the hypothesis that undergraduates who peer teach genetics will have greater understanding of genetic and molecular biology concepts as a result of their teaching experiences. Undergraduates enrolled in a non-majors biology course participated in a service-learning program in which they led middle school (MS) or high school (HS) students through a case study curriculum to disco...
متن کاملLearning while Teaching Robotics
This paper outlines a mentoring experience in which undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science spent their summer teaching robotics to high school students in Harlem. We describe two programs in which we worked with undergraduates to develop and implement robotics curriculum. Then we report on a valuable and often overlooked piece of the project — the learning experience of the undergr...
متن کاملCase based teaching at the bed side versus in classroom for undergraduates and residents of pediatrics
Introduction: Bedsideteaching is defined as teaching in the presence of apatient, it is a vital component of medical education. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two methods of case based teaching (at the bedside and in the classroom) in the teaching hospitals (for both undergraduates and residents of Pediatrics). Methods: Thirty undergraduates and twenty pediatric resid...
